Harvesting Cork Flooring
The bark requires periodic harvesting in order to preserve the longevity of the tree.
Harvesting cork flooring. Each trunk has to reach a circumference of about 70 cm when measured 1 3 metres above ground level. Cork flooring is not a common flooring choice in australia but has been installed in europe for many years. Cork flooring is durable and long lasting. It also has a cushiny spring like texture that makes it safer for small children and it is less.
The seasoned cork is then steamed clean and the natural bio organisms growing on the bark are removed. Harvesting cork relies on a time honoured set of skills that must comply with many rules. The tree itself is never felled. This process is known as the cork harvest or bark removal.
Subsequent harvests will happen in 9 year cycles after that between may and august. Instead the bark is harvested from the tree every 9 years and it regrows more bark. After 25 years the cork oak tree is ready for the first harvest. Once harvested the cork bark is seasoned in the field for 12 months.
This seasoning will both age the cork and dry the naturally occurring oils and resins. To become the raw material we are familiar with cork must be extracted from the cork oak. It takes 25 yearsfor a cork oak trunk to start to produce cork and be profitable. The cork tree is never felled all of amcork s sustainable cork flooring and wall covering products are all natural cork made by harvesting only the bark of the cork oak.
It is not cut down and then replanted like most forestry efforts. The process involves removing the cork from the tree without having to fell it. The cork oak tree is unique among trees in that only the bark is used to make wood products. Harvesting takes place during the most active phase of growth of cork between the middle of may or beginning of june until the middle or end of august.
It is also less likely to crack like wood flooring.
